Curb & Sidewalk Specifications

The first sheet outlines the "Typical Curb & Sidewalk Section. " It details the cross-section of a standard sidewalk installation, including:

• Dimensions: The curb is 18 inches high with an 8-inch base. The sidewalk extends 3 feet 6 inches from the curb line, followed by a 4-foot grass plot.

Driveway Entrance Standards

The second sheet details the "Depressed Curb Drive Entrance. " This section provides instructions for creating driveways that intersect with the sidewalk:

• Widths: Maximum widths are set at 12 feet for single driveways and 16 feet for double driveways, unless approved otherwise by the Board of Supervisors.
• Construction: The entrance requires a 1/2-inch premolded expansion joint.
• Concrete Specs: The concrete must have a strength of 4000 P. S. I.
• Maintenance: Sidewalks must be scored every 5 linear feet, and curbs every 10 feet.

Accessibility Ramps

The third sheet covers "Curb Cut Ramps for the Physically Handicapped. " These standards ensure ADA compliance for pedestrian access:

• Slope: The maximum slope for the wheelchair ramp is 12 to 1 (12 inches horizontal to 1 inch vertical). In narrow sidewalks where a 3-foot landing cannot be achieved, the slope may increase to a maximum of 8 to 1.
• Surface: The ramp surface must be rougher than the surrounding sidewalk, achieved through coarse brooming.
• Joints: A 3/8-inch expansion joint is required where the ramp meets rigid pavement.
• Subbase: A 4-inch aggregate subbase is required for the ramp structure.

Street Restoration

The final sheet provides "Restoration Detail for Existing Streets" following utility work. It distinguishes between temporary and permanent paving methods:

• Trench Width: The maximum trench width is 24 inches plus the pipe's outside diameter.
• Base Material: A 4 to 6-inch bed of AASHTO No. 57 stone is required under the pipe.
• Backfill: Trench backfill must be coarse aggregate #2A, mechanically tamped in 8-inch layers.
• Patching: A 3-bit stockpile patching material is to be placed to street grade.
• Pipe Types: The details cover both concrete pipes and PVC pipes, specifying a 12-inch minimum clearance on either side of the pipe.
