Central Cambria Coalition Celebrates 5th Anniversary

The Central Cambria Coalition, formed by Ebensburg Borough, Cambria Township, and Jackson Township, celebrated its fifth anniversary in 2011. The coalition meets monthly to address mutual concerns and share resources. Key achievements include:

• Equipment Sharing: A $25,000 grant was used to purchase a street sweeper. Additional grants funded a paving machine ($25,000), crack sealing equipment ($22,000), and an asphalt hauling trailer ($18,700). The municipalities also share equipment like paving rollers and bucket trucks.
• Planning: A $45,000 grant funded a joint Comprehensive Plan, and an additional $32,500 grant updated zoning ordinances to ensure consistency across municipal borders.
• Topics: Discussions have covered park maintenance, oil and gas drilling, water lines, wireless communications, emergency services, traffic signals, and economic development.
• Joint Studies: The coalition is considering shared police services and sanitary sewer service along Route #22. They have also agreed to use the Middle Department Inspection Agency for building code enforcement to ensure uniformity.

Veterans Park Improvements

Refurbishing of the county-owned Veterans Park is underway. The park, built in 1913, required significant updates to its monuments and landscaping.

• Monuments: MEC, a Nanty Glo-based company, is refurbishing 25 memorial plaques and the Civil War "armed sentinel" statue.
• Flag Park: Five new service flagpoles will be erected around a new U. S. flag to honor all branches of the military.
• Landscaping: New streetlights, garden areas, interpretive signs, and trees along Cherry Street and Crawford Street will be installed. New benches are also planned.
• Timeline: The project is a joint undertaking with Cambria County, American Legion Post #363, and VFW Post #4963. Completion is expected by late August with a rededication ceremony planned for late August.

Benches

As part of the Veterans Park refurbishment, ten new benches are being purchased.

• Details: The benches are six feet wide with cast iron side supports and wooden Pau Lope slats.
• Cost: Each bench, including a bronze plaque, costs $1,000. The donation is tax-deductible.
• Dedications: Plaques can identify donors, businesses, lifelong residents, or those who served in the military. Cambria Care Center has already purchased two benches.

Sidewalk Update

The sidewalk improvement project along East High Street and Rowena Drive (between downtown and Tanner Street) has been approved by PennDOT.

• Status: Bids were opened on June 22nd, and construction may begin soon.
• Scope: The project includes new sidewalks, curbs, Victorian streetlights, signage, and stormwater improvements.

Mayor Recognizes Ebensburg Area Ambulance

Mayor Randy Datsko formally recognized the Ebensburg Area Ambulance Association during EMS Week. He presented a proclamation praising their 24/7 service and sophisticated equipment. The association has served the community since 1968.

Entrance Sign

Thanks to the Ebensburg Rotary Club, a new "Welcome to Ebensburg" sign is being erected at the east entrance near Lake Rowena.

• Design: The sign reflects the "second empire" architectural style of the Cambria County Courthouse, featuring limestone quoins.
• Dimensions: 12 feet wide and 8 feet high.
• Construction: Major Builders of Johnstown is constructing the sign. Matching signs are planned for five other entrances to Ebensburg.

Garbage Collection & Recycling

• Prohibited Items: Building rubbish, industrial refuse, tree trimmings, hedge clippings, grass, stones, bricks, earth, plaster, concrete, paint, general building materials, automobile parts, batteries, and tires.
• Recycling Schedule: Curbside recycling is conducted on the 1st and 3rd garbage collection days of the month. The first recycling day is the first week that contains both garbage collection days (Wednesday and Friday).
  • Example: In August, recycling days are Wednesday, Aug 3rd and Friday, Aug 5th.
  • Example: In September, recycling days are Wednesday, Sept 7th and Friday, Sept 9th.

Concerts in the Park

Free concerts are held every Friday in August and the 1st Friday in September from 6 PM - 9 PM at Penn Eben Park.
