Lee Disposal Returns to Ebensburg

Lee Disposal has won the contract for residential garbage collection and recycling in Ebensburg Borough, beginning service on January 1st.

Trash and Recycling Schedule:

• Schedule: Residents can find the 2012-2014 schedule in the document.
• Recycling Days: Recycling occurs on the first week of the month that contains both a Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • January: 3rd (Tuesday) and 4th (Wednesday).
  • February: 7th (Tuesday) and 8th (Wednesday).
• Prohibited Items: Building rubbish, industrial refuse, tree trimmings, hedge clippings, grass, stones, bricks, earth, plaster, concrete, paint, general building materials, automobile parts, batteries, and tires are not permitted.

Recycling Procedures

Recycling procedures have changed. Recyclables are now co-mingled in the same collection truck and separated later at the Blair County Resource Recovery Center.

• Bins: Use the blue recycle bins provided by the Borough (available at the borough office during business hours).
• Approved Items: Clear, brown, and green glass from food/beverage packaging; plastic bottles/jugs (numbers 1 and 2); tin and aluminum cans.
• Instructions: Do not use plastic bags. Bundle newspapers (not magazines) with string or twine and do not mix them with other recyclables.
• Drop-off: Residents can also take recyclables to the county’s collection station along Manor Drive.

Sewage Testing

Ebensburg Borough is conducting DEP-required testing of residential and commercial sewage systems to detect infiltration (stormwater illegally entering the sanitary sewer).

• Method: Smoke testing will be used. Smoke is pumped into the system and rises out of illegal taps (downspouts, drains, etc. ).
• Impact: Smoke may enter buildings if sewage traps are empty or lacking. The smoke is non-toxic and leaves no residue.
• Notification: Property owners will be notified in advance via the local newspaper.
• Cost: Owners with illegal sources of infiltration are required to pay for corrections.

Water Project

The Ebensburg Municipal Authority is starting a water system improvement project costing just over five million dollars.

• Scope: Replacing portions of the water distribution system, upgrading the water treatment plant, replacing all customer water meters, and improving remote water pumping stations.
• Funding: Paid for with a rate adjustment implemented last year.

Borough Pool Improvements

The 70-year-old swimming pool has undergone extensive renovation and is now in compliance with current codes.

• Completed Work: Drains replaced, filtration systems modernized, handicap access provided, leaks stopped, water slides and play structures installed, pool heated, concrete deck replaced, interior tiled, and bathhouse privacy improved.
• Grand Opening: Saturday, May 26, 2012.
• Pool Hours:
  • Monday - Saturday: 12:00 p. m. - 8:00 p. m.
  • Sunday: 12:00 p. m. - 6:00 p. m.
• Rates (Effective Jan 23, 2012):
  • Resident Individual: $120. 00 (Adult), $100. 00 (Child/Senior)
  • Non-Resident Individual: $150. 00 (Adult), $130. 00 (Child/Senior)
  • Daily Admission: $6. 00 (Adult), $4. 00 (Child/Senior/Twilight)

2012 Budget

The Borough Council adopted the 2012 operating budget in December.

• Amount: Nearly $4. 5 million.
• Taxes/Rates: No tax increase; all rates and fees remain the same.
• Improvements Funded: Sidewalks, street paving, entrance signs, two new trucks, playground equipment at the pool and Lake Rowena, and park improvements.
